Visitor to Canada Insurance: What to Compare

A practical checklist for reviewing plan terms, deductibles, and dates before you choose.

Start with the traveller and trip

Write down each traveller’s arrival date, expected departure date, age, and whether they are already in Canada. Eligibility and purchase timing vary by policy, so confirm that the traveller can apply before comparing prices.

Compare the policy wording

Check the emergency medical limit, deductible, covered expenses, exclusions, effective date, and claim process. A headline benefit or premium does not explain what a specific policy pays for.

Read health-condition definitions

If a traveller has a medical history, read the policy's exact pre-existing-condition definition and any stability period. Answer application questions accurately and ask the insurer to clarify terms before buying.

Plan for a claim

Find out which number to call in an emergency, whether the insurer must be contacted before treatment, and what receipts or records may be needed. Keep the policy certificate and emergency instructions accessible during the trip.

Use this quick comparison list

For each option, record eligibility, coverage dates, benefit limit, deductible, exclusions, pre-existing-condition terms, and emergency-assistance steps. Compare the same details across policies and confirm them in the policy documents.
