International Student Insurance in Canada: A Starting Guide

What to check with your school and insurer before your study term begins.

Ask your school what applies to your program

IRCC says health coverage for foreign students differs by province or territory and recommends contacting the school. Ask about any mandatory student plan, enrolment deadline, start date, and how to get the plan documents.

Check the provincial or territorial health plan

Eligibility and effective dates depend on the province or territory and the student's circumstances. Use the responsible health ministry's current information; do not assume that a study permit automatically provides provincial coverage.

Map the dates before arranging private coverage

Compare your arrival date, school-plan start date, and any provincial coverage start date. If there is a gap, ask the school or insurer what options and eligibility rules apply for those dates.

Separate emergency and routine benefits

Check whether a plan addresses emergency treatment, routine care, prescriptions, dental services, or other needs. Limits, exclusions, and provider rules are specific to the policy, so verify each item in its documents.

Keep a coverage checklist

Save the school plan details, provincial health-plan guidance, private policy certificate, effective dates, and emergency contact instructions. Recheck the information if your campus, province, arrival date, or enrolment status changes.
